Responsive / Smartphone
As a creative & forward thinking company, Swordfox create responsive websites to provide an optimal viewing experience across a wide range of devices, from mobile phones to laptops & desktop computers. We also have vast experience in producing mobile specific websites where a responsive approach is not possible.
How do they work?
Content on a site adapts to the platform & screen size that it is being viewed on. This website is responsive, so no matter what platform or browser size you are viewing it on you will see the same content but just formatted slightly different.
For example, if you are on a desktop computer, try resizing your browser window & see how the layout re-formats to fit the available space. Likewise on a mobile or tablet device, the content of the site is the same just with a different layout to fit. Responsive example: Commonage Villas Queenstown
How are responsive websites different to mobile sites?
Mobile websites generally refer to a mobile-specific version of a site. The mobile site most likely uses information taken from the same database used by the full site, but ultimately it uses an entirely different version of the site. When a user first visits the site and is detected as a mobile user they will be redirected to a mobile version of the site.
You may have experienced this before, as an example, see the differences when viewing these 2 variations of the AJ Hackett International site: www.ajhackett.com (Desktop version) or m.ajhackett.com (Mobile version - obviously best viewed using a smartphone).
Some advantages of responsiveness over mobile specific
Swordfox prefer to take a responsive approach rather than a mobile specific approach.
Responsive sites are future proof, we design for screen sizes, not different devices, as long as a site works well across a full range of screen sizes, it should work well across a range of devices. Using a responsive design means reduced maintenance - you only need to make changes and updates to a single site, not on a desktop & mobile specific sites. Responsive sites do take a little longer to develop in the first instance but this added time is much less than the development time taken to produce a mobile specific site.
Ultimately, all of this means that responsive web design is an efficient, cost effective means by which you can ensure your website is mobile friendly and provides an engaging experience for desktop users alike.
Smartphone or Mobile specific websites
Mobile sites should be engaging, simple to use & have clear call-to-actions.
We build mobile sites that highlight the important aspects of your business for those viewing your website from a mobile device. For example, if you are an accommodation or adventure provider we would put the most emphasis on 'Book Now', 'Call Us' or 'Location' with get directions using your location via GPS.
Our mobile websites work on all major smartphones including iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Mobile.
Say hello if you'd like to discuss the development of your responsive or smartphone website.
